Scholar-Athlete: Bill Walton’s 1972 Academic All-American Certificate
Bill Walton’s trophy case is full of athletic honors, but this certificate recognizes something else. It was presented in recognition of his selection as an Academic All-American basketball player for the 1972 season. He was a first-team Academic All-America in 1972, 1973, and 1974, and he graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1974, and was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1994. This is the first of those three honors, from his first varsity season. The 1971-72 UCLA Bruins went 30-0 and won the national title, with Walton a consensus first-team All-American and the Naismith and USBWA player of the year. He was a champion on the court and a first-team scholar in the classroom, in the same season.
The certificate is one of two issued for the award. The other was laminated on a wooden display plaque, which makes this the unmounted example. Walton’s athletic résumé is well known: three consecutive national college player of the year awards, two NCAA titles, two NBA championships, and the 1978 NBA MVP. Academic honors are far scarcer on the market than game-used items or athletic awards, and they show a side of Walton that fans don’t always remember: the history major who was also the best college player in the country. For collectors of Walton or of the Wooden-era Bruins, it’s a rare personal document from the first season of a three-year run unlike any other.
