Before Charlie Hustle: Pete Rose’s 1964 Wedding Album, With Original Photos and the Invitation
Pete Rose was a 22-year-old Cincinnati kid when he got married. After finishing boot camp for the Ohio National Guard, he married Karolyn Engelhardt in Cincinnati on January 25, 1964. The timing is the story. Rose had hit .273 in 1963 and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award, collecting 17 of 20 votes, and he walked down the aisle in the winter before his second season, with the local ballplayer’s celebrity just starting. His career had barely begun. The achievements that would define him were still ahead: three batting titles, a 1973 MVP, three World Series championships, and 17 All-Star selections.
This album captures that moment through original photographs and the wedding invitation, a personal record of a milestone from a time when Rose was a rising star in his own hometown rather than the player who would later set the all-time hit record. He broke Ty Cobb’s longstanding mark of 4,191 hits in 1985 and finished with 4,256 by the time he retired in 1986. Almost everything collectors have from Rose comes from the field: bats, balls, jerseys, and cards. Wedding photos from January 1964 show the man behind the numbers at the very beginning of that run, a hometown hero who hadn’t yet become Charlie Hustle.
