The Final Swing: Brian Roberts's Game-Used Bat From His Last Orioles Game, September 29, 2013

Brian Roberts's 13 years in Baltimore ended quietly. The Orioles had missed the playoffs a year after reaching them for the first time since 1997, and on the final day of the 2013 season they trailed the Red Sox 5-0 with nothing to play for except one more win. Then they came back. J.J. Hardy and Nate McLouth hit two-run doubles in a five-run fifth inning, and in the sixth, Roberts doubled off Matt Thornton, then scored on Ryan Flaherty's double, which proved to be the game-winner in a 7-6 win. Jim Johnson got his 50th save, and Baltimore beat a Red Sox team that was 97-65 and headed to the playoffs. Roberts, who was set to become a free agent, played his final game as an Oriole, and he ended it with a double.

This Max Bat BR1 was used in that game. It measures 33 inches, is uncracked, and shows light use, with visible ball marks and impressions on the barrel. After years of injuries, Roberts had returned to play 77 games at the end of 2013, a long way from the leadoff man who hit 56 doubles in 2009. The Orioles didn't bring him back, and he played one more season, with the Yankees in 2014. For collectors, a bat from his last game in orange and black, with a documented double, is a fitting piece from the end of a 13-year run by one of the franchise's best second basemen.
